Ubuntu currently comes with PulseAudio, and that

sound server, or does it go straight to oss or alsa?

- From what I can tell, it goes directly to OSS or ALSA. I know ALSA is
installed and all other mdeia programs such as mplayer, rythmbox,
totem all link directly to ALSA. That's where I'm unsure about
espeak. I understand it was compiled to use OSS. Well, espeak
requires portaudio to work and portaudio 18 uses OSS and I'm pretty
sure portaudio 19 uses ALSA. I think the portaudio used by debian is
18 and to get espeak to use the other portaudio version, one has to
recompile with the right header file and link accordingly.
