The main problem with speakup is that it requires major patching to the
kernel and may not work with the latest kernels. Most distros no longer
have speakup precompiled, so the kernel has to be rebuilt in order for
speakup to work. Speakup is great if you need to hear all the boot
messages, but if you are looking for an easy install, unfortunately it
isn't very easy to get going.
