From all the proposed solutions this seems to me as the most user
friendly one. So questions which arise:
How would I go about altering gnome so it won't start pulse audio
It must start its own Pulse Audio so that the applications inside Gnome
can output sound. You must
also start your own user Speech Dispatcher inside Gnome, otherwise
things won't work
I think the rest is simple I just need to change speech-dispatcher
output device from alsa to pulse.
The rest yes, but the whole thing (changing
/etc/init.d/speech-dispatcher etc.) isn't so simple for a user. Please
lets wait a moment now to see whether we will manage to sort these
things out somehow without asking you and the other users to do all of
this by hand.

Hynek
