I would add to the list of distros which seem to be working well,
Slackware. Unfortunately Slackware doesn't come with gnome by default,
but there are some gnome distributions for Slackware. I use gnome slacky
from www.slacky.eu (or for those who only speak english, me included,
http://www.slacky.eu/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2475
which is an english translation). Note: I think the brltty 3.8 package
for Slackware does not include the python bindings which I think orca
needs, basically uninstall the brltty package and compile from source,
not very painful.
If you are familiar with redhat ways, then fedora is probably going to
be more to your liking. I've tried a few distros, and for some reason
Slackware is the one I keep coming back to.

Hi John,
You can get the latest stable source from
ftp://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/sources/orca/2.20/orca-2.20.0.1.tar.bz2
In general, the sources to packages are in
/pub/gnome/sources/<package-name>-<package-version>, where
<package-version> corresponds to the major and minor number (ie, 2.18,
2.20, etc.)
Or you can check out sources from svn if you're being adventurous; details
are on the Download/Installation page on the wiki.
Hope this helps,

I've just joined this list. Recently I got Redhat Enterprise Linux with
Orca-1.0.0. I've been trying to download the latest stable release of
Orca because it may have better braille support, to say nothing of
access to more applications. However, when I go to the Gnome ftp site I
find that the directories have odd names. I am using Lynx until I get
Orca up and can use Firefox. Is it worth downloading the latest version?
How do I find it? The Orca pages should have a direct URL to the latest
stable release, as BRLTTY does.
Thanks,
