I have got speech-dispatcher 0.6.2 running on ubuntu, I did it by
compiling from source. I think I removed the ubuntu speech-dispatcher
0.6.1 package first (so if speech-dispatcher is installed in the default
prefix /usr/local then it won't cause possible problems). I then used
the old ubuntu package init script for speech-dispatcher, but modified
it to use user root instead of user speech-dispatcher. I think that
solved it, I may have missed something though and don't know if this
might cause potential security issues.

Hey there Tomas and other listers, this is really weird. I modified the
init.d script to point to the newly compiled speech-dispatcher, and on
bootup, I receive the error message "can't create pid in
/var/run/speech-dispatcher". When I launch from the command ($sudo
speech-dispatcher), this error does not occur. Any ideas? Again,
thanks much in advance for all the help.
Hi Guy, I'd really recommend waiting for the Ubuntu package, since the
package will solve these problems for you. If you try solving them yourself
it is always hacking and it requires quite some expertise. If there is
anyone who managed to solve that on a Ubuntu box, I'd be glad to hear.
It's hard for me to give an advice since I don't have a Ubuntu system to
try on. In general, SD needs the directory /var/run/speech-dispatcher
to exist and to be writable by the user under which it runs. As far as
I understand it, /var is mounted as tmpfs in ubuntu so that is causing
the trouble...
Best regards
Tomas
