, and I am highly against any kind of forms mode.
Yes, me as well. However, it seems that there needs to be either a special
key sequence to get into a textarea, or get out of one. Yes, tab would do
it, but it could take you quite a ways away from the current control,
depending on the structure of the document. Seems that the escape key would
be a good mechanism for escaping from whatever field your in, regardless of
how you got there. It closes menus, should colapse a combobox, and could be
made to allow one to arrow away from a textarea. If any printable character
were typed after an escape, then it would be entered into the textarea and
the effects of escape would be canceled. Agreed that it sounds a bit like
forms mode too, but how does one handle the case of the textarea without
special activation or escape-from keys?

I am in favour of being able to open combo boxes with the space bar. I
however don't like to have to press something to start typing in a text
box. If it's a text box, I should be able to just start typing into it.
Having to press something to start typing in a text box is way too much
like forms mode, and I am highly against any kind of forms mode.
Live long and prosper,
Lorenzo
