Re: [orca-list] easiest way to update drivers

Hermann and Others:

The necessary sophistication is present on Linux via alsa. The problem
is that our various speech engines continue to talk oss, and that's
going to continue to be a problem until they stop doing that.

I understand that it is inconvenient to code up such dramatic changes,
however the result of current practice is grossly inadequate end user
support, and that is worse than inconvenient. I've been harping on this
topic for years. I'm glad others are now also complaining, because we
need to get this changed.

PS: Once reason sometimes given for not changing is that oss provides
support across OS. In other words, the oss based engines will work on
Solaris and Aix, as well as Linux. To my mind this is not an acceptable
response, because the end user is still denied proper functionality.

Hi,
if I remember well, someone wrote a few days ago, that Espeak uses an
older mechanism called OSS instead of Alsa. So it seems to be a problem
of teh OS, not the sound device.
Windows seems to be a bit more sophisticated in some areas.
