The answer for this problem is speech-dispatcher.
It supports alsa output etc.
I.ll test it today on my laptop because its soundcard isn't able to play
several sounds at atime.

if I remember well, someone wrote a few days ago, that Espeak uses an
older mechanism called OSS instead of Alsa. So it seems to be a problem of
teh OS, not the sound device.
Windows seems to be a bit more sophisticated in some areas.
