Is it possible you are running some self built, or unusual Linux
distribution ? what version of glibc are you running; does rpm --verify
glibc pass ?
It doesn't look like an ORB bug you're right - do all other programs
execute cleanly ? /etc/ld.so.conf is unlikely to cause an problems.
Unless that is you've put something so bad in it that it crashes the
runtime linker.
