but doesn't on linux ... lolz :D so definitely a configuration problem ... :D

Uhm, have you tried a live CD of e.g. Ubuntu/Linux Mint to see if it is a configuration problem or if it could be a hardware problem as well.

Ubuntu 8.04 is 3 years old. I would suggest installing the latest version first.
