Ok I recant what I said, the version in Edgy doesn't seem to support
WEXT. The version in Feisty does however but there is a howto on the
Ubuntu Forums that gives instructions for installing the newer driver

aha. but not aha! i was reading the 'howto' and thinking that
rather than get involved with all that kernel-making hair [and the
uncertainty of which of the zydas things to use, especially since i'd
been there and found it extremely unclear as to what the status of
the 1215 as opposed to the 1211 really was], unless i came across a
less unattractive revised version of the howto later on along the
thread i'd sooner give the inelegance of trying ndiswrapper on the
built-in broadcom 4311 [if it really is one, and not a newer version;
fwcutter couldn't cope with the vista .sys for it, anyway] until i
came to #46 on the last page, which seems to be saying that if i fix
up my wpa_supplicant.conf right the 'dongle' might well work w/ the
kernel i've got. so i think i'll try that.
then give ndiswrapper a go.
then wait for feisty.
and/or sue lenovo/ibm for false advertising over the absence of the
ipw3945 i'd been misled to believe was part of the allegedly good
iron i'd bought....
thanks for the help. i'll try not to bug you for awhile, at least,
and maybe not at all other than to report success. [tho if anybody
has any insights more suitable for offering off-list, i'd certainly
be glad to hear them.]
