Unfortunately I'm not sure I'm repeating it reliably any more.

Sorry, how does one do that?  Do you mean 

       $ sudo /etc/init.d/NetworkManager stop
       $ sudo NetworkManager --no-daemon?

       NetworkManager <information>  starting...

       it is already taken (ret=3).  Is the daemon already running?
