I should also add that my new fstab entry:

 UUID=****-**** /mnt/FAT\040storage vfat user,noauto 0 0

somehow precludes the device from the independent device scan (as nothing is
shown with this fstab entry in place).

In short, it seems to be a case of twice or not at all.
