Re: [Nautilus-list] Nautilus Goals

Seth Aaron Nickell wrote:
This man's needed feature is about a hundred-fold increase in speed
before I will even consider using it. Konqueror does all these nifty
things too, but hey, it's much faster . . .

The only areas I know of where Konqueror is significantly faster is
opening new windows and memory usage. Nautilus currently opens new
directories, particularly large ones, significantly faster, copies files
faster (barely, but a little), loads web pages marginally faster (this is
really attributable to mozilla 0.9.1, but whatever).... If Nautilus
performs slower on your machine in particular areas, I would really
appreciate a message with your machine specs and stopwatch timings on
specific operations.

Saying "Konqueror is faster" doesn't help much at all...
OK, how bout if I say "Konqueror is MUCH faster"?

Sorry for the HTML, but I tire of pandering to the "I can't take HTML even tho it makes life so much easier" crowd.

Task:
Nautilus
Konqueror
Cold start (no relevant processes running)
18 seconds
12 seconds
Warm start (close file manager, then while helper processes are running, start another)
10 seconds
3 seconds
Open directory in current view
4 seconds
1 second
Open directory in new window
8 seconds
2 seconds
Open/View 3.1k text file
3 seconds
1 second.
Open/View 58.k jpeg file
4 seconds
3 seconds

In Konqueror, options such as view text preview and view image preview were on.  Nautilus is mostly as shipped, except desktop management is turned off.  It is unbearably slow for many common operations, such as switching the virtual desktop.

Everything about this test was exactly the same.  The same directories were opened, the same files were viewed.

Also worth noting is the list of processes left running when Konqueror exited.

These processes killed themselves within 10 seconds of Konqueror being closed.  On the other hand . . . .

The Nautilus processes had to be killed manually.

The machine used was a PIII 450 with 256MB ram.
