Problem is the we need to cater to the news source. Many people like to
blog their news, many like to send it to a GNOME mailing list. Some like
to post it on the webpage of their project, and a very few take the time
to submit it to a CMS like Footnotes.

If we unify around one solution, the quality and quantity of the news
feed will reduce because your taking away or neglecting a news sources
preferred way of relaying their news. This is why I believe the current
system in place at http://planet.gnome.org/news/ is the right direction
to take for a centralized news system for GNOME enthusiasts. It just
needs a way for visitors to customize what is shown so it isn't too
overwhelming. Visitors can still visit the individual source if they so
choose or they can go to the planet type news system as a one stop shop.
And as people like me can still feed news to the system through a CMS
like I do now.

We still need news on the GNOME homepage, the problem is a feed from
Footnotes, or planetnews, or other sources isn't proper or of high
enough quality for the homepage.

So what is? Gnome Journal stories are, and occasional stories that run
on Footnotes. What would be cool is if there was a method that news
sources could use to tag news stories that were appropriate for the
homepage. Then then maybe the aggregator on news.gnome.org could also
generate a feed that only contained these news stories suitable for the
GNOME homepage.

As far as the archiving issue, Most of the feeds themselves contain
several months of archives. The last entry on my higher volume feed from
Footnotes is 3 weeks old. Maybe instead of letting older entries fall
off the bottom of the page, we could let them fall into a sidebar that
only contains maybe the feed name, title, and date of X number of
entries. Or they could fall off onto secondary pages.

Just some thoughts.
