In my experience with the Apple server I have noted extremely poor performance when it is doing interactions with zlib. Try disabling the zlib and zlibhex encodings and the performance should be closer to expectations (I don't think it supports zrle and tight, so no need to disable those...)

Oh, there's a couple really old encodings tightvnc supports that we don't (like a raw zlib one). Perhaps it's using one of those?

Yes, the Apple server supports the zlib encoding (6), but its support is painfully slow. It could also have been the zlibhex encoding (8) that was so incredibly slow, I don't remember exactly, but it was one of them...

Also, wouldn't tightvncviewer be negotiating 3.7? That's what it normally supports.

TightVNC 1.3.9 speaks "RFB 003.008\n", I just double checked. The tight security type (16) isn't affected by the 3.7 -> 3.8 changes, so it was probably easy to "upgrade" TightVNC to the new protocol.

Cheers,
Peter
