In summary, why not distribute a stand-alone package that includes all
the necessary libraries, so users can GET TO USE gnumeric?
gnumeric, goffce, libgsf, glib (etc), X, libc, kernel, bootloader.
What you need is known as a distribution. Non-hackers generally need
binaries, not source code, and the distributions are doing a fine job at
supplying that.
Moreover, if you use 1.0.5 that would mean your distribution is from
early 2002. I am not the least bit surprised that installing a recent
Gnumeric on a base that old is a bit of a nightmare.
