Debian doesn't have a modprobe.preload you need to bother, only /etc/modules.conf (and /etc/modules for hardcoded, always loaded modules). This gets made up from /etc/modutils/, so i guess Mandrake has another scheme. However, trying manually first before using automagic might be an option.
