Mdk also uses /etc/modules for the always-loaded modules.  In 
general, /etc/modules.conf is used by the 2.4 kernels 
and /etc/modprobe.preload is used by the 2.6 kernels.  I guess this is in 
case you need different modules for the different kernels.
