Problem remains even after gnome-shell is rebooted. start closing all the applications and it got much better. This time still not back to the original speed but still under 1sec.
If I log out completely I'm good again.

I don't think that's a hardware issue, you'd be getting random errors,
not slowness.

Use memory is 5429/5982, which is quite high given you have 6GB of RAM.
Something must be eating memory.

Can you paste the relevant output from 'top'? If you hit '<' 3 times,
you'll get the processes sorted by memory usage.
Please restart the Shell with Alt+F2 and 'r', and have a look at 'top'
again.
