Well...turns out I didn't have usbfs enabled in my kernel, so
no /proc/bus/usb entry. I changed this, recompiled the kernel,
rebooted, and voila--palm found.
Not sure why this is necessary and didn't see any mention of this being
required anywhere, but at least its working.
