Tungsten E can't sync

I'm having trouble syncing from Evolution with my Tungsten E.  The
gnome-pilot setup process is failing at the step where gnome-pilot tries
to get my username from the Palm.  I have heretofore been using JPilot
without any difficulty.  With gnome-pilot, I have tried pretty much
every sensible communication setting, including /dev/usb/tts/1 that
works with JPilot.

I'm using gnome-pilot 2.0.12, pilot-link 0.11.8 running on Gentoo with a
2.4.28 kernel.

Any pointers on troubleshooting this?
