It was a clever idea. Unfortunately, the variables are expanded *before*
producing the POT file, so the intent of easing translation is defeated.

It is actually better that way for a lot of languages. For example, in
Polish I need to translate "123 changes" and "128 changes"
differently.

That's work for plural forms. We may split it in different strings and store the %d values somewhere out of the pot file. It'll make translators life much easier. I'm not sure how hard to to achieve it though.

The same case for screenshots, we don't really need translators to take sreenshots. As for me it's rational.
