I am one of the developers of VEDICS... 
We started VEDICS as a college project. We had a time constraint of 3 months so we didn't bother about using python because none of us knew python.
Now that the college work is over, we are in the process of moving VEDICS to python so that it can integrate well with Gnome 3.

The branch is almost finished at:

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/~carlosgc/gnome-applets/log/?h=libpanel-applet-dbus-merge

but it needs to be merged into gnome-applets master. There are also a
lot of applets outside gnome-applets that needs to be ported.
