oops, i meant: "Writing XCF compatible with older GIMP versions is clearly an export".
(That is, a composition with legacy blend modes can just be saved as any other composition.
Only when backwards compatibility is requested, the export conversion is necessary.)
Elsewhere, please read "legacy XCF" as "XCF with at least one legacy blend mode".
