Yes, indeed - a second Gnome choice appears! I then tried changing just
the file content to stumpwm (i.e. filename still gnome2.desktop) as well
as changing also the filename, but in both cases the 'session' menu
disappears again, defaulting to gnome only? 

stumpwm is however in /usr/local/bin while gnome-session is in /usr/bin,
maybe I should try the whole pathname...

Ok, I tried that and that did the trick! Not sure though why, does this
mean that /usr/local/bin is not in the search path for gdm and can this
be set?

Thanks for the smart fault localisation method, that's really the way to
go!
