That doesn't sound normal to me, but I haven't configured a system to
use ldap in a long time, so I don't know.

So the one key I was curious about was IncludeAll. That's why I asked
fro custom.conf and defaults.conf.
In defaults.conf it is set to true, which I would believe could cause
a slow down. In custom.conf it's set to false. custom.conf should
take precedence over defaults.conf, unless you've made the change
recently and haven't restarted gdm (or run gdmflexiserver -c
"UPDATE_CONFIG greeter/IncludeAll").
Anyway, you might try running gdm-restart to see if that fixes your
slowdown. Otherwise, I'd investigate the nss_ldap failures you are
seeing, if I were you.
You might also try adding something like,
*.* /var/log/debug_messages
to /etc/syslog.conf and restarting syslog to see if anything
interesting shows up in debug_messages
or try adding Enable=true to the [debug] section of
/etc/X11/gdm/custom.conf to see if it provides any more insight in
/var/log/messages.
