Well, actually, my statement was not exactly correct. The situation is
much worse.

I'm no EXIF expert, but apparently camera manufacturers pack custom
data that doesn't really fall into standard EXIF fields and call it
"maker notes." What F-spot did to my images was totally screw up the
makernotes pointer, effectively deleting all makernotes from my
images. Thankfully, none of the lost data is really essential, but
it's still nice to have. It's things like lens used, detailed WB info,
which AF points were in focus, light readings from each image zone,
"Hometown" (which I'm assuming is why my times get changed to GMT),
manufacture date of the camera, number of total shutter actuations,
etc.

I've spoken to Phil Harvey, author of exiftool, about this problem,
and he's confirmed that the data is unrecoverable:

All this, just because I checked "write metadata to files" in prefs. I
was silly enough to think it would only change the keywords field.
