Locking the gui with the extension dialog would not be a problem.
I believe I had a different situation.
With the 200 photos db, the gui disappeared almost instantly. After few
seconds of work F-Spot gui locked. CPu and disk ran 100% for one minute
or two, then everything resumed.

Maybe we should better talk about this later on irc. ;)
