Since the FAQ is kind of a community effort, would anyone object if I
went through it and dropped any mention of releases earlier than 2.30?

Seems reasonable to me; every current distribution, probably even one
level back, is at least 2.30.
Depends what you mean by current! RHEL5/CentOS5 is current and
maintained and uses 2.12. I realise the RHEL6 is out now, but many
would still consider RHEL5 to be current.
