Again: Defining a new label, either in the system preferences -> Mail or
by selecting a mail and using the right-click pop-up, adds this
new label to the above mentioned combo-box allowing you to filter the
list according to this criterion. Entering a term in to the search box
to the right lets you search within these mails.

I know all that. However it doesn't get me where I want to go. Consider
this: if I'm only interested in Unread mails, I can select that from the
combo box and it works. Furthermore, if I mark a message as Read the
list updates automatically (not instantly, but whenever Evo decides to
do it, typically if I leave the folder and return, or if a new message
arrives.) I'd like it to be instant but I can live with it as it is. Of
course I can also update the view manually by reselecting Unread.

Now suppose I don't just want Unread messages, but Unread AND/OR Todo
AND/OR Important. I can certainly define a label -- let's call it
Interesting -- which encompasses those criteria, but the folder will not
update if any of the criteria change for a message unless I *manually*
change the Interesting label as well as for example Todo or Important. A
filter is simply not capable enough because it can't remove labels.

What I really want is a dynamically updated view of the folder where I
can specify my own selection test with sufficient flexibility, and not
just use the wired-in tests Evo already has. The irony is that Search
Folders already do this, but for others reasons aren't really what I
want either (see original post).

PS Slightly OT, but why can't one filter on "not Deleted"?
