Is there an existing solution to this, and if not, does it sound a

Not sure if it's a solution, but what i've done is
Search/Advanced Search/set the search criteria/save to an appropriate
name.
Then, when needed, Click the Main Menu Search to get the dropdown and
select the named search. So, I think it' basically the same thing except
using the main menu Search dropdown rather than the Show selection list.

In fact this is one of the options I mentioned in my post, but as I said
it's not really what I want since I can't subsequently use the Search
function. It needs to be one of the selectable views under the Show
menu.

Have you seen the combo-box above the message list? There you can choose
various criteria, among them unread mails, most recent mails, or mails
of the last 5 days or mails containing certain labels. And you can use
the search box to drill down further.

Please read my message again. The "combo box" you mention is exactly
what I'm talking about. The existing criteria are of limited use and I
want to be able to add my own.

But you can define your own labels, use filters to set labels on mails
and these new labels are then available in the combo-box.

Telling me to use the Search box
completely misses the point, which is that I wish to define a *default*
view for a folder and if necessary then search within it,

But that's what I meant: First use the combo-box to limit the view of
messages having label "important", for instance, and then enter
something in the search box to search within those messages. Just tried
again. Works for me.

as I already
can if the default is one of the predefined options, e.g. Unread. I
can't do this conveniently if I'm already using Search to define the
default view.

Once you have chosen a criterion in the combo box, it stays the default
view until you hit Ctrl-Shift-Q, even if you leave the folder and return
to it. Works for me in 2.28.3.
