Re: [Evolution] What happened to Evolution?

Rob,
Thank you so much for these tips. Greatly appreciated and I will try
them out.

Best,
Darren

Hello Darren,

I have had problems with my large Evolution Inbox and Sent mail boxes. I
took the steps described below to improve the performance of Evolution.
I too noticed Evolution getting slow and performing like a dog. Also
Expunges were not completing for me. I moved my clutter from Inbox and
Sent mail boxes to archive mail files. Since I have done this Evolution
has performed much better but I do suffer the annoyance of daily crashes
from which I can recover from quickly.

Recipe for archiving mail boxes.
  1) I moved old e-mails up to 01/01/2009 into an archive mail box.
  2) I attempted to deleted the old e-mails in the active inbox.
  3) Evolution continued to fail to expunge the deleted mail messages..
  4) So.. I closed evolution. I used mutt to open the Inbox
     {{{
        mutt -f Inbox
     }}}
  5) I used mutt to delete the e-mail up 01/01/2009 from the active mail
box.
Mutt did the deed and saved the Inbox without the deleted messages.
  6) Evolution is now able to expunge the active Inbox as it should.

Thank you,
Rob

     Hi,
hmm, that might broke your folders.db file(s) and explain all the issues
you are experiencing.

After that I couldn't open my Inbox folder. I could open others
though. After almost every receive mail action, I get errors storing
folder. And the folder rotates around. Not always the same. The error
dialog for that claims something about a 'column name'.

Heh, exact message would be good too, but as long as it sounds like the
DB corruption...

When downloading messages from a single POP endpoint, it goes into
'Storing folder (0%-100%)' over and over. Not sure what that is and
why it does it every time.

Please go to
~/.local/share/evolution/mail
where are 'pop' and 'local' folders, where each contains a folders.db
file. Could you try to stop evolution and then move away (not delete,
just in case something will be worse) those two folders.db files away,
and then run evolution again, to see whether it'll be better, when the
files will be regenerated from scratch, please?

Also, I believe no ACID may help you when you are killing hung
application "in the middle of its operation". :)
     Bye,
     Milan
