This is what I'm doing:
1 Create Folder under On This Computer called XTrash
2 Unhide deleted mail in a folder (my Inbox)
3 Create an Advance Search Find Now function for the folder and find all
the deleted mail
4 Select all to high light the deleted mail
5 Right click on the high-lighted and deleted may and select Move To
Folder... from the menu and select the just created XTrash folder as the
destination folder
6 Hay presto! The mail has been copied and not moved!!!

How do I go about succeeding to do what I want, which is to move the
deleted mail to the folder called XTrash so that it is nowhere else but
XTrash?

Any ideas, comments?

Well why don't you use an archival system rather than mucking around
with deleted mail? I've never understood the mindset that leads to
"I've pressed delete, but I actually still want to keep it" - if that's
the case, don't delete it.
Because in every other computer user environment where there is a
"Trash", delete means "move to the Trash folder" - try highlighting a
icon on the gnome desktop and hit delete, where does it go - the Trash
folder.

And, I'm not sure which mindset is less understandable - one where
"delete" means "move to the Trash folder" or one where "delete" means
"hide" the item...
- moving mail out of Trash into an
archive doesn't seem to work,

Why don't you just set up a message filter with a search criteria of
'Match All' and an action of 'Copy to Folder'. Then you will have a
copy of every email you ever receive and you can delete and purge to
your hearts content without having to worry about trash folders.
Because I don't want umpteen copies of every concievable message in my
email client - I just one copy which I know where it is, whether I
believe I've finished with or still got something to do.

It was originally - but then lots of people grouched that they couldn't
find the trash folder so it got moved to be amongst the normal folders.
Also, I know you don't use IMAP, but there is a Trash folder for each
individual IMAP account, and that would be confusing if they were all in
'Search Folders'.
Hmm, more logical approach would be to allow "Search Folders" to be
nested within the other folder hierarchies...

So, I'm trying to moving the (un-hidden) deleted mail from
folders to an archive folder - except they're not moved; they're copied!
 - and then deleted - same effect as moving. In fact, I can't think of
an instance within mail handling where a 'move' isn't implemented as
'copy and delete' - it's just so much safer. What you are really
Ah, NO - and then NOT deleted! They're still there!!!

grouching about is the fact that the messages are marked as deleted
rather than being removed from existence when the messages are 'moved'.
Well I don't really care whether they're marked as delted or moved to a
Trash folder - what I'm confused about is that when one "moves" a
message marked as delted it isn't moved, it's copied - so, I'm using up
twice the disk space for that messge as I was before I tried to move it!

I think at this point it's time to say: "perhaps we've lost our way", so
I've re-posted the order of events from my first post to the head of
this post, just so nobody has to read to the end of this post to get the
point - of course if they want to they can, and then go round again...

:-)

M.

Morgan,

I understand your frustration. When we were forced to Exchange server
(Only Mapi, no imap or pop) I started using Evolution. I was shocked
when a few months later I get a call from the admins to clear out my
exchange server folder as I was running out of space. Ouch.

I thought my little filters that were "moving" my mail to my local
machine was actually "moving" the messages. What it was doing was
marking the messages as moved and deleted but not "expunging" them.

Now I have dropped the filters and just drag and copy all my messages to
my local export folder. I then expunge the "Inbox" twice. I do it
twice because I have found that it won't actually remove all the
"deleted" messages on the first time, every time. I blame exchange
server for this issue.

I now only use Evolution to get my mail off of Exchange server and
export it to Thunderbird.

Thanks Robin, good to know I'm not alone.
M.
