Since this setting is in pixels, my guess is that the value is much
higher than it is expecting. Change that to something between 100 and,
oh, say, 400.
Not saying that will work, but it's worth a try.

Sadly, it didn't have any effect and I'm still getting the same display
of 'year' view only with the same error message as I first posted.
Thanks for helping me rediscover gconf anyway :-)
You should have two pane handles besie the list of calendars on the
left, drag the second one to the right.

THAT was IT!! :-)))
How STUPIDLY simple. I feel a real dork not to see that :-(
On the other hand, while I take my hat off to the developers of an
excellent application, what a sad and twisted piece of UI programming to
torture new users with a _feature_ like that! :-(
Now I've got it set with all my old appointments visible (from when I
did the import from Evo 1.0.8) and the year view in another pane - and
NO more error message. So, maybe the lack of error message is due to me
changing the integer value of
the /apps/evolution/calendar/display/month_hpane_position to a value
<320000 on Lonnie's advice previously. Guess who's a happy camper now?
Thanks to Lonnie and JP.
Hmm, this problem is supposed to be caught in the migration code, I'll
have to see why it isn't picked up.
