Downloading the _list_ takes the same amount of time. 

But if you are going to sort it yourself, you _also_ need to download
all the headers for every mail in that list, and possibly the body too
depending on what you're sorting on.

If you're letting the server sort for you, you don't have to download
anything else except what the user actually indicates they want to see.
