I would argue that evolution has something to do with it, but perhaps not entirely. I also used mozilla during my troubleshooting attempts and experienced no problems.

However, when I implement it, the spurious ???? is gone walkies. I don't
care who says what: It's still an Evo bug, since other clients don't
have it.
