Re: [Evolution] How to compact empty mailboxes?

Jim Bowen sez:

2. Eliminate any data from expunged messages from the ibex file by:
 a. Choosing File->Folder->Properties and deselecting "index contents"
(this will delete the .ibex file)
 b. Repeat a and _select_ index contents to rebuild a new .ibex file

That seemed to do the trick nicely. Thanks!

I had seen the large .ibex files, but didn't want to just delete them
directly because I didn't know what they were for.

I had one .ibex file that was 22 megabytes, for an empty mailbox. Maybe
a nice addition to evolution would be to rebuild the index when one
empties the trash or expunges. Maybe I can submit a patch sometime :-)

For the most part, I think it should work for me not to have most of my
mailboxes indexed. So I just disabled the indexing in almost all of my
mailboxes, except the one for mail directly addressed to me (thus not
mailing list mail).

Doing that freed 150 megabytes out of the ~250 MB evolution had
previously been using.

Thank you for your help, I appreciate it. Evolution is a fine program,
and I like using it, but the disk space was killing me.
