Thank you for your reply. I tried saving the default settings. Although the
left hand table of contents was absent, the new
defaults were 70% magnification and the page still not fitting the browser. Is
there anything else I can do to fix this? Thank you again.

You should be able to change your default settings by Using the
Edit->Save Current Settings as Default.
