Do you prefer "to take control"? or "to compel"?
It's what's happening with deja-dup. We like to provide a software for
backups, but it should be only one good and blessed solution. When/if
another program will try to emerge, it will be compelled to avoid deep
integration, 'cause we already have a service for it.
I'm sure our developers and designers are able to produce the best
software, and I dislike when some downstream tends to replace GNOME
stuff with external stuff[1] but I see differentiation and (sane)
extensions as resources.
BTW if we (you) really want to make an awesome OS, the way we (you)
envision, maybe you should file a bug asking to remove the ability to
change gnome-shell behavior and appearance through extensions feature :P
