You'd be surprised. I currently have 15, 11 of which are standard OS
X "applets" (but not all of which are turned on by default, admittedly).
On the plus side, the good thing about OS X menu extras (as they're
properly called) is that they're all generally of a uniform size and
appearance (they fit into a square, and they're monochrome)-- the 15 I
have still take up less than half the width of my menu bar.
