You don't need to set your own master. It is just a general advice in
order to check that you have configure properly your slave, mainly for
people that require to configure from zero his jhbuild
environment. But it is true that this general advice is not included
on the howto.

Yes it is not mandatory.

"jhbuild bot --start-server" automatizes most of the work required.

Ok, so as Frederic Peters said, you could try to go directly to the
slave part.
