My original email's wording was bad/wrong, let me rephrase it: Banshee is reimplementing video playback using gstreamer, ffmpeg, etc, and I suggest that instead of doing that, we use mplayer, as it has not only solidly implemented, it's also packs in additional functions such as complete subtitle support.
As a point of supporting mplayer, it is thoroughly customisable, which will make Banshee more viable as a media player, despite starting out only as a music player. mplayer, I'm sure you're all aware, is one of the best and most solid and efficient video players out there.

@Michal, there are other functions like subtitle support I'd like to see on Banshee.

@Toki, Banshee uses gstreamer. Gstreamer is a complete multimedia
solution owned by Freedesktop.org, a separate project from Banshee and
developed separately. It can use, and does use, ffmpeg, which mplayer
does, too.
I can't see any advantage of using mplayer over gstreamer in Banshee,
while I can see many disadvantages, the tiniest of which is the
requirement to reimplement the whole playback stack for mplayer.
Maybe try to address this the other way around - what are your issues
with video playback in Banshee?
