Depending on how it is implemented then the Zen X-Fi may need its own
little exception/special handling. I've got one as well and while they
theoretically support M4A/AAC, they only actually support ones from
iTunes. If you've got M4As from elsewhere (Winamp is the support topic
example) then the Zen doesn't actually support them. I don't know if
there is a usable indicator/differentiator between the two sources or
not, but I'll keep an eye on it when M4A/AAC support lands (I've just
CCed myself on the ticket).
