Re: [Banshee-List] ADO.net and ECMA

I agree with you, however the anti mono crowed will not be so easy to convince.

Their are people proclaiming that none of the mono applications which are candidates for inclusion as default rely on any mono implementations of non - ECMA Microsoft libraries.

Also people are proclaiming that the non ECMA Microsoft libraries are not required for development on linux.

It is also said that linux distributions do not include the non-ECMA libraries by default and so people have nothing to worry about.

If Banshee is to be included by default on ubuntu 9.10 as default then all of the above will be not true.

Banshee requires ADO.net so Ubuntu will ship by default with ADO.net a non standardised library which is not covered by the community promise.

If the anti-mono crowed gets wind of this we will have big problems.

Microsoft has chosen not to standardise ADO.net for whatever reason.... The mono answer to another non standard library (winforms) was to provide a superior alternative. All I'm suggesting is that we do the same here.

Cheers,
Daniel

Honestly, I do not agree. There are a wide variety of similar
abstraction libraries for other languages (DBI for Perl, PDO for PHP,
etc.) that I think would work quite well as prior art for the API that
has been developed by Microsoft. I find it very unlikely that there
is anything new or novel in ADO.NET.
