This may sound slightly obvious, but have you followed all the steps

Matthew,
Thanks for your reply. The link above contains the following:
*
*Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Dapper Drake)*
o
Install the following packages to play most proprietary
formats using Totem
<https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MultimediaApplications#totem>
and Rhythmbox
<https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MultimediaApplications#rhythmbox>,
which both come with Ubuntu.
o
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
o
gstreamer0.10-pitfdll
o
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
o
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse
o
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
o
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse
Since the version of Totem that comes with Ubuntu doesn't
yet play DVDs, the list below also includes packages for the
GXine player, which does. For playing encrypted DVDs, refer
to DVD
<https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats#dvd>
section
o
gxine
o
libxine-main1
o
libxine-extracodecs
o
w32codecs
Note: to enable w32codecs, see the w32codecs section
<https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats#w32codecs>
All these files have been installed and I have checked other MP3
settings on the page. However, but both Banshee and Totem display the
same "Playback Error - Could not get/set settings from/on resource."
message. Is there a service that needs to be started or something like
that?
On a positive note, gxine DOES work (I am listening to "Its a kind of
magic" appropriately as I type this).
It looks like gstreamer is 'stuffed'.
Regards,
Peter
