interoperability and designs achievements of the XML-1.0 W3C
Recommendation.

OTOH, just replacing closing tags with </> would achieve up to 50%
"compression" for many kinds of documents, without changing semantics at
all ;)

[1] as in direct compression or more general packaging as the
    ZIP format of OpenOffice documents.
