--disabled-shared under cygwin had any affect (like it does under
linux). If
there are methods to build libxml2 as shared libraries under cygwin

wonderful. However my argument is that Daniel's sources should build
"out-of-the-box" (at least for common environments).

I agree with the goal. My point was that you can get a OOTB shared
library buildable libxml, just not from Daniel. And as soon as possible,
you will be able to get it from Daniel :}.
