This, of course, cannot be achieved without breaking *every library*
based on GObject, so I'm not sure the gain would be worth the effort.

Yeah, that would be a bad thing. It might become feasible if the
majority of future GNOME/GLib/GTK/etc. system and application
development were to move to Vala, but I'd think that probably doing
some sort of method name mangling (just not to the extent that C++
does) would be best.

Not necessarily. Changing GLib (in a non backward-compatible way) and
updating all the depending libraries would be enough.

But, as you can see, it would be *a lot* of work to achieve an arguably
small benefit.

I would love be able to change the get_value() methods in a library I
maintain to a more suitable get_type(), but if that means breaking the
entire GNOME stack... I'll live with that ;)

P.S. The message quoted by Michael was supposed to go to the list, but
     I messed up the recipients.

I guessed that; your mail was the second one that came to me that way.
I am guessing that maybe something about the way posts coming from
GMANE show up on-list maybe causes the message's reply-to to be
abnormal?

I'm not sure about the reason, but when I reply to one of your messages
your address instead of the ML one is listed in the To: field.
