I'd also argue that it just doesn't matter.  It's a hardware detail, and
not a particularly interesting one at that, especially if you don't have
any media in there.  What it's really about is getting at the data on
those devices, and as long as you have a reliable automounting system
the hardware is pretty irrelevent.  Of course, the exception there are
floppy drives, and for hardware that's unreliable in that respect, it
probably makes sense to show the device despite not being mounted.
